Game Development History

R.B.I. Baseball is a video game originally developed and published by Namco in Japan as “Pro Yakyū Family Stadium” for the NES in 1986. A year later it was licensed and distributed in the US by Tengen, a subsidiary of Atari Games. As the first console game to feature Major League Baseball (MLB) players and teams under an official license from the MLB Players Association, R.B.I. Baseball gained significant popularity. The game offers a simplistic, arcade-style gameplay experience, allowing players to choose from various MLB teams and compete in single games or full seasons. Known for its engaging mechanics and nostalgic appeal, R.B.I. Baseball is regarded as a classic in the sports gaming genre, inspiring numerous sequels and modern remakes.

Glitchs

  • Phantom Foul Ball - Balls hit that are obviously foul but are called fair.
  • Double Play Glitch - A double play where the force play at second isn't called out.
  • Throwing into the stands - A fielder too close to the stands will have their throw end up there. It is possible to go back into the stands and retrieve the ball for most errant throws, but it takes so long that an inside-the-park homer usually comes out of it.
  • Pitcher substitution - A glitch in which you pinch hit for the pitcher, yet he's still pitching the following inning.
  • Foul ball out - A foul ball lined into the stands on the first base side is called out.
  • Ending the inning on two outs - The second out of the inning is the last out.
  • Foul ball home run - A home run crosses into the stands as a fair ball but subsequently curves into foul territory can be called a foul ball.
  • Pitcher not on the mound - A strange glitch where the pitcher is not on the mound after a play in the field. The pitcher can still throw the ball, but will be way off the plate.
  • Passed ball - A common glitch where the outfielder throwing the ball will miss the catcher covering home and the ball rolls to the wall.
  • Run past base - A defender running to a base ends up running past the base and into the outfield.

  • What year are the player stats from?

NES: stats are either from 1986 (Ca, Bo, NY and Ho) or 1987 (Mn, SF, SL and Dt) MLB seasons. However there are numerous exceptions; for example many pitchers have really low ERAs. Occasionally they took the average from one year and home runs from another.

ARCADE: players are a mix of all-time greats, so player stats can be from any year before 1987.
